Meet Shasta Mathews

Shasta Mathews, better known as Klevah, is an artist-educator and founder of The Miseducation of HipHop – a program that uses the language of Hip Hop to improve adolescent mental health, literacy, and self-confidence. With over 15 years of experience mentoring youth across the U.S. and abroad, she has worked with the U.S. State Department’s Next Level program, Guitars Over Guns, Freedom School, and Dream Academy, using music, storytelling, and the spirit of the cypher to help young people discover the power of their own mind. Most recently, she completed a year-long residency in HISD schools through DYAD Consulting, where her 8th grade curriculum fostered student growth in confidence, creativity, and community building. Rooted in authenticity, collaboration, and cultural relevance, Klevah’s teaching philosophy blends artistic skill-building with intentional mentorship, empowering youth to transform their stories into success. For this program, Klevah will lead a series of Mindfulness Yoga and Creative Arts workshops, encouraging students to grow in wisdom and their personal worth.
